Oyster River

Oyster restoration 2003 – 2006

In 2003 the Noank Aquaculture Cooperative began working with the Oyster River Coalition in Old Saybrook, CT to reintroduce oysters into the Oyster River after the population had been decimated by disease. The project was funded by Ocean Trust through money received from NOAA. The project was successful in restoring oysters in several of the locations. Sedimentation from runoff was a major problem in the river.

Sugar Kelp Nursery Project with UCONN

November 2014 – November 2016

The members of the Noank Aquaculture Cooperative are currently working with Dr. Charles Yarish and Dr. Jang Kim on a project to transfer the technology used to grow sugar kelp from their laboratory in UCONN Stamford. We are learning how to collect reproductive cells from the kelp and set them on seed strings to be deployed on long lines in the Long Island Sound. Our co-op member Bren Smith of Thimble Island Oyster Co. has been a pioneer in growing kelp in Connecticut.
